Chapter Twenty-Three

Gage

Brett leaned toward me and lowered his head a little, giving me a weird gaze.

“What?” I asked.

“You sent that stuff to Jon,” he said. “Jon talked to me about it. I emailed you something. Now you’re quiet on me.”

“I’m thinking about a lot at once here,” I said.

“Since when does that bother you?” Brett asked.

“I didn’t say it bothered me. I’m just telling you I’ll get to your email when I get there.”

“I think you’ll like it. I know it’s killing you to give up two properties.”

“Sometimes you have to make tough choices,” I said. “Can’t have that sit there and devalue everything else. Which is what it would do.”

“Yes, it would,” Brett said. “It was a good idea. At the time.”

“Brett,” I said. “That’s why I’m having Jon figure it out. I don’t want to think about it anymore. Or talk about it.”

Brett showed me his hands and went back into his own space.

Across from me, Dax stared at me.

“You okay?” I asked Dax.

“Are you?”

I looked away from Dax to an empty chair.

I pointed. “Where’s Joel?”

Brett pointed out the window.

Joel was outside, on his phone

“Must be working on that deal,” I said.

“Can’t imagine it,” Brett said. “Working that gig. Dealing with athletes. Those guys are huge. Rich. They’re good looking. I don’t know how Joel competes.”

“Competes?” Cole asked.

“You know what I mean. With the women. He must be stepped on constantly. That would be tough to get through.”

“Or maybe the women enjoy him because he’s not always so busy,” Cole said. “Athletes go through a lot during a season. Plus injuries and stuff.”

“That’s true,” Brett said. “Still…”

“Are we really worried about Joel’s bedroom life?” I asked.

“Good point,” Brett said. “Mine is as busy as ever. I’m working overtime over here. What about you?”

Brett elbowed me and grinned.

I looked at Cole. “How’s the kid?”

“She’s great,” Cole said. “I’m a little surprised Jackson didn’t show up. After all this time hating me for the whole breastmilk thing…”

“He’s got his shot now,” Hudson said from the end of the table. “I can’t even imagine what he must be like at home.”

“Last time I saw him, he was a little bit calmer,” I said. “It was weird.”

“Just picture him,” Cole said. “Like a kid on Christmas… pacing his bedroom, Callie sitting on the edge of the bed. Every few minutes, she squeezes one of her breasts, waiting to see if milk…”

“Really?” Hudson asked. “Who are you right now?”

Cole laughed. “I don’t know. I was just prepped for a Jackson conversation. Now I don’t know what to do.”

“You know he’s going to drive you nuts,” I said. “Questions and everything. You more than Finn. I’m sure he’ll bother Finn after the baby is born though. Damn, the three of you… with kids…” I shook my head.

“They can go on Daddy playdates,” Hudson said. “With the strollers and diaper bags…”

“Are you shitting on me right now?” Cole asked Hudson.

“Hey, I’ll tell you one thing,” Brett said, pointing at Cole. “You end up at a park with a baby, you call Uncle Brett.
